Stand alone solar
systems
These are the situations where a stand alone solar system can be a
solution:
- In area’s where
there is no grid at all
- In area’s where
the grid is unreliable/unstable
 In
remote areas where a 230V grid is not nearby, you might still want
electricity for the household. This can be for having a light in the
evening, a refrigerator to cool food throughout the day, or maybe a
water pump to retrieve water for daily usage. The sun is a good source
for this energy (Photo-Voltaic power), and it shines for free. By
converting this solar light into electricity and saving the energy in
batteries, you can use your appliances whenever you want to. The
batteries are large to provide extra energy on a cloudy day when the sun
does not shine.
For the Solar Home
System Stroomwerk has developed a unique feature: the Powerbox. This
invention is very suitable for Fee-For-Service projects. A well known
problem within a Solar Home System is the ‘tickering’ of the battery
caused by overconsumption. To prevent this abuse the battery and
regulator are placed in the lockable Powerbox. The Powerbox contains a
special energy management regulator that prevents continuous deep
discharging of the batteries by regulating the daily use. Further
because of this it is now longer necessary to use a special deep cycle
solar battery. All this will result in an significant reduction of both
battery replacement and
investment costs. The Powerbox is sold in
combination with al Solar Home System or as a separate component.

You can calculate the Stand alone PV system that perfectly matches your needs using the following calculation assist program.
Because each region over the world has a different minimum solar irradiation (minimum daily PV energy production in kW/m2/day), we want you to point out the
location where you want to have the solar energy system installed. The world has been divided in six solar irradiation regions on the given map
in the PV
Calculator. Select your region using the pull-down menu in the form.
The second step will be calculating your daily energy consumption, by completing the form. Select how many appliances you would like to use. Write down the type of appliance (Appliance), how many of these appliances you want to use (Quantity), the power consumption of each separate appliance (Consumption = the rated power in Watt (W) = Voltage * Current, mostly found on the back of the appliance) and how many hours per day you want to use it.
Clicking on the "(Re)Calculate" button will give you the Total amount of energy which you want to consume every day. An extra ten percent is added to the Total consumption to get the Actual consumption which is used to calculate your system. Click the calculated system for the specs. To print out the results click the "Print" button in the form.

Especially for off-grid situations where you do need to cool products,
Stroomwerk had designed a standard stand alone PV fridge system. Two
solar modules are the generator of this system. The modules have cables
with connectors. The charge regulator regulates the charging of the
batteries and protects them from getting overcharged. This extends the
lifetime of the batteries. The batteries store the energy which has been
produced during the day. These 12V batteries are connected to each other
in such a way that they increase the voltage to 24V. The provided
batteries are maintenance free, which means that no liquid levels have
to be checked, nor water or acid has to be added. A installation manual
